The Ghosts of Virginia

I was reading one of these last night and thought it might make a pretty good post...

These are some great books from my collection about the many ghosts and legends of Virginia. I am guessing that Virginia is very haunted since there are at least twelve volumes of this book that I know of (maybe more), with each one being around 400 pages long. Sadly, I have never personally seen or heard anything that I thought couldn't be explained away as something else... oh well, maybe one of these days I'll have an encounter. Anyone who lives in or around Virginia may find them interesting because of the places that are mentioned from all over the state that they may have been to or heard about. I like to read the stories about places near me or places that I may be travelling to, and think it is really cool when I get to see the actual house or place that was mentioned in the book. I especially enjoy reading about the stories from the 1700's and the 1800's that are in these books, for some reason they are always my favorites.

I have found these in Barnes and Noble stores in Virginia, but doubt they would be in any of the stores outside Virginia, and I've also found them on eBay and Amazon if anyone is interested in them.

  1. Sounds like Virginia rivals Nova Scotia in the ghost story/haunting department! I'm always looking for ghost stories and walking tours as well as tales of "true" hauntings, both around home and when I travel. I'll have to keep these books in mind if I ever get to Virginia. :)

  2. Cool! My wife is in one of those. I believe the second volume.
Stephanie works for the Winchester Star and she tries every year to do some ghost story around Halloween, I always follow her on those. :-)

  3. That's cool Johnny, I'll have to look for her story. I like how all the books are organized by geographical area, I'm getting ready to go to Williamsburg in about a week so I'm going to have to read up on some Williamsburg ghosts before I go. There is a whole book just on the ghosts of Williamsburg by this author also!

  4. These are my favorite kinds of books! I love ghost stories. I have some of these books myself, but I don't recall the names right now. I'll have to find them and share them. I love curling up with a book full of good ghost stories, and reading them before I go to sleep! We have plenty of haunted places here in CA, too. I don't live far from where the famous Gold Rush took place in Coloma--where gold was first discovered by James Marshall. Coloma has one of the most famously haunted houses in CA. It's called the Vineyard House, and it has even been featured on 'That's Incredible' and 'Unsolved Mysteries'. It used to be a restaurant, and we used to go and have dinner there when I was a kid. Right across from it is a graveyard with graves dating as far back as the early 1800s. The original family who built the house, and who reportedly haunt it, are buried there. I love going down there. I wish they would re-open the house, though. Here's a link to a published story about it if anyone's interested:

There is so much history in our area. I love that about it. Seems like every area has its haunts.

  5. Man, Unsolved Mysteries... that used to be one of my favorite shows, I'm sure I probably saw that one. My best friend and roommate from the Army used to call ourselves having "Unsolved Mysteries Parties" after work where we would watch the show and pig out on snacks and stuff.

  6. Great Blog. I just picked up on it. I met the author of these books at a Ghost tour in Williamsburg a few years ago. The tour was based on his books. The tour was great and his books are as well.
